保守派的克魯茲曾參與共和黨提名初選，但最終敗給川普。他曾嚴厲批評川普是「病態的騙子」、「毫無道德」。
克魯茲在23日表示，他只是遵循支持黨總統提名人的承諾，即使過去川普曾稱他是騙子、攻擊他的父親和妻子，並指稱他的父親和前總統甘迺迪(John F. Kennedy)遇刺案有關。
面對越來越強大必須支持川普的壓力，克魯茲說，他會投票給川普，但在臉書上公布的聲明中，仍拒絕正式為川普背書。
這種區隔可能對選民不會產生太大的影響，但能使克魯茲在至今仍不願原諒川普的支持者中保住顏面。在今年共和黨代表大會中，克魯茲拒絕支持川普，並呼籲共和黨選民「以良心投票」，遭到川普支持的噓聲對待。
克魯茲說：「經過數月的仔細考量、祈禱和尋求我的良知，我決定在大選日(11月8日)，將會投票給共和黨的提名人-川普。」
川普立即接受克魯茲的支持，並形容這是「背書」。川普說：「對於參議員克魯茲的背書，我深感榮幸。」川普表示：「我們打過仗，克魯茲是一位堅強、傑出的對手。我期待和他合作，以讓美國再度偉大。」
